RYAN Gosling missed the 2017 Baftas because of a ‘family matter’ which saw him fly back to the US.

The actor had been expected to attend the ceremony which was held in London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Ryan’s name was down on the list of attendees and on the night, eager fans were screaming his name on the red carpet.

When his La La Land co-star Emma Stone turned up alone, she stayed tight lipped on his absence until an official spokesperson for Bafta confirmed he had been called away.

They said: “Ryan had a family matter to attend to, he is sorry not to be here this evening.”

“He sends his appreciation and thanks for everything.”

La La Land was the biggest winner of the night with five gongs including Best Film, Director and Leading Actress for Emma.

The 28-year-old gave a gushing speech on the night and called on the world to come together.

Holding her gong tightly in one hand, Emma told the audience at The Royal Albert Hall: “It feels like the world is going through a bit of a time right now…

“Sorry, I’m losing my words, this always happens…

“In a time that’s so decisive, I think it’s so special we are able to come together to celebrate the positive gift of creativity.”

Emma also acknowledged the Bafta community for voting for her, telling them: “Thank you so much for this, this is an unbelievable honour.”

She later opened u about sharing her “traumatic audition” experience on the set of the film – which walked away with five awards.

Emma said: “With Birdman, my character was outside the actor’s mind really – she was just his daughter, not totally involved in that world.

“But with La La Land, I had a little more trepidation playing an actress in Los Angeles who was auditioning over and over.

“It’s pretty close to my exact appearance when I first moved there.

“It was scary – like, is this going to be too much? But then it quickly became fun because we were all sharing horror stories and dramatising our little traumatic auditions.”

Earlier on in the evening, Emma had rather an awkward interview with Zoe Ball on the red carpet.

Zoe, who was hosting from the red carpet for the Bafta live feed, chatted to the 28-year-old about the movie, which is also nominated for Best Film.

Emma said: “That’s what makes it exciting and ambitious and challenging and that’s part of the fun of getting to do this.”

Zoe then asked if she had her speech prepared in case she walked away with the coveted gong.

Looking a little bit bemused, Emma replied: “Oh god…”

She then awkwardly looked away and raised her eyebrows before she added: “We’ll see. You know, I’m just going to enjoy the show. That’s what I’m going to do.”

Then Zoe added: “I’ll just say the one word to you – Cruella.”

Zoe was referring to the news that she will play Cruella de Vil in Disney’s upcoming 101 Dalmatians spin-off.

But she asked Zoe, “What about her?” as the host replied: “Is it coming soon?” Emma said: “We will see, it’s very early so we’ll see how it all pans out.”

Then, as Emma looked around for her escape, Zoe added: “Looking forward to Battle of the Sexes too. Good luck tonight, hopefully we’ll see you later.”

In the style stakes, Nicole Kidman led the trend of plunging necklines on the red carpet, with Emma Stone and Sophie Turner also daring to bare on the night.

Although the Lion star loved her look, she later admitted her children might not agree with her choice.

Elsewhere, Kate Middleton stole the show in a sensational gown designer by Alexander McQueen.

Alongside Prince William, the Royal couple got the biggest cheers of the night as they arrived at the Royal Albert Hall.

However, Bond star Naomie Harris and Made In Chelsea’s Millie Mackintosh missed the mark when it came to their choice of designer gowns.

British star Dev Patel – who won Best Supporting Actor gong for his part in Lion – told The Sun Online how he’d watched endless episodes of Masterchef Australia to help him prepare for the role.

The actor gave an emotional speech when he collected his award and struggled to hold back the tears.

Best Supporting Actress winner Viola Davis used her acceptance speech to slam Donald Trump’s comments about Meryl Streep.

The evening’s host Stephen Fry kicked off proceedings by grabbing Meryl Streep for a kiss.

He had the audience in hysterics throughout the night and at one point sent up Prince William by mocking his relation to EastEnders star Danny Dyer.

Meanwhile, a recent poll by Cineworld revealed that four in ten people believed La La Land should win the Best Film gong. However, 43% of the cinema chain’s Unlimited Card members believed Deadpool should have been one of the films in the running against La La Land.
